ABOUT THIS SITE

FAR-and-NEAR is an ongoing journal of my favorite impressions, encounters, and images from my travels over the past two decades. Each year, I set out to explore a new corner of the world, collecting stories, sketching sights, snapping pictures, and collaging bits and pieces in my journal. I've been to 40-some countries so far and I feel like I'm just getting started. As Susan Sontag said, "I haven't been everywhere but it's on my list." I share some of my favorite journal entries here.

The site is updated weekly and there are three ways to see what's new. You can: subscribe to the RSS feed; get new entries by email; or join my mailing list if you'd like a digest of entries and other news several times a year. (Your information is not shared or made public.)

Thank you for visiting.

FAR-and-NEAR TRAVEL MAGAZINE (2001-2004)

From 2001-2004, FAR-and-NEAR.com was home to a pioneering travel magazine that explored travel in the context of issues such as vanishing cultures, tourist guilt, sustainable tourism, backpacker culture, and international aid and development. It encouraged readers to explore the world, to travel responsibly, and to support the development and humanitarian work being done around the world. This novel approach to travel and its many talented contributors helped to make FAR-and-NEAR a leading online travel magazine with a loyal global following, numerous awards, and highly favorable international press and media coverage. The last issue was published in 2004.
